Dysport is a neuromodulator injectable which is very similar overall to the more well-known Botox Cosmetic. The product works using botulinum toxin to temporarily block nerve receptors in muscles.
This smooths dynamic wrinkles, or the wrinkles that form as a result of facial movement. Tiny amounts of Dysport are injected into specific facial muscles, causing a local relaxation. The lines and wrinkles gradually smooth out and new creases are prevented from forming.
Other facial muscles, like those needed to raise the eyebrows, are not affected so a natural expression is maintained.
Botox and Dysport are similar products which work using the same active ingredient, but have varying formulas. Botox has been available in the U.S. for longer, and is therefore more widely known. Some patients may select one product over the other based on their personal preference, and your injector can help you choose the best option for you. On average, Dysport results tend to be more immediate, but Botox results tend to last slightly longer. Dysport also results in softer results than Botox, which for some make it appear more natural for first-time patients.

Before you receive Dysport injections, your injector will review your health history to ensure that Dysport is a safe and suitable option for you. You may not be a candidate due to health conditions such as bleeding disorders or milk allergies. Some patients may also be poor candidates because their lines and wrinkles are not caused by repetitive facial expressions. For these patients, filler injectables are recommended instead.
