Dysport is a neuromodulator injectable made with botulinum toxin, similar to Botox. This botulinum toxin product works by temporarily blocking nerve receptors in muscles. This smooths dynamic wrinkles, or the facial wrinkles that form as a result of facial movement. Tiny amounts of Dysport are injected into specific facial muscles, causing a local relaxation. The lines and wrinkles gradually smooth out and new creases are prevented from forming. Other facial muscles, like those needed to raise the eyebrows, are not affected, so a natural expression is maintained. This makes it one of the most effective and efficient ways to treat frown lines, severe glabellar lines, forehead lines, and more. Botulinum toxin products have been used to treat medical conditions such as muscle spasms for decades, meaning they have a long history of safe use when administered by a top-quality and knowledgeable healthcare professional.
Botox and Dysport are similar products which work using the same active ingredient, but have slight variations in their formulas. Botox has been available in the U.S. for longer, and is therefore more widely known. Some patients may select one product over the other based on their personal preference, and your injector can help you choose the best botulinum toxin product for you. On average, Dysport results tend to be more immediate, but Botox results tend to last slightly longer. Dysport also results in softer results than Botox, which for some make it appear more natural for first-time patients.
Years of squinting and frowning tend to leave deep wrinkles in the skin. On many people, frown lines produce an angry or sad look that detracts from a pleasant facial appearance. Simple injections of Dysport® will improve these lines without surgery and without scars.
Dysport is primarily intended for lines between the eyebrows, known as glabellar lines or 11 lines. However, your injector may suggest botulinum toxin injections for many other areas, which can include:
Before you receive Dysport injections, your injector will review your medical history to ensure that Dysport is a safe and suitable option for you. You may not be a candidate due to health conditions such as bleeding disorders or a history of allergic reactions (Dysport contains cow’s milk protein). Some patients may also be poor candidates because their lines and wrinkles are not caused by repetitive facial expressions. For these patients, filler injectables are recommended instead.
After your Dysport injection treatment, you may experience minor redness, swelling, and itching at the injection site. Dysport produces results in about two weeks, at which point it’s recommended to return for an appointment to evaluate your results and discuss any concerns. It’s also recommended to retreat every 3-4 months to maintain results. You will receive a detailed list of possible complications that should warrant medical help, such as allergic reactions, blurred vision, droopy eyelids, and more.
