Botox vs Fillers – which one is better for you?

Posted on April 10th, 2019 in Botox, Fillers

For an easy rejuvenation treatment that doesn’t require any complex surgery, many patients are turning to injectables. Even though Botox is the number one injectable, dermal fillers are not far behind. When choosing an injectable treatment you must consult a well-trained and experienced provider to understand the differences between the many available options. Your injector at MDSkin Lounge will help you to know which of these treatments will be most beneficial to you.

What are Botox and fillers?

Botox is the brand name of the botulinum neurotoxin. There are 3 neurotoxins approved by the FDA and these are Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport. All three of these work similarly in that they temporarily alter muscle function to prevent muscle contractions. You are still able to make natural facial expressions, you just won’t be contracting muscles that form the many wrinkles or fine lines on the face. Fillers, on the other hand, are used to fill and plump lines or areas of depression on your face. The fillers used at MDSkin Lounge are Hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane and Juvederm.

Even though both dermal fillers and Botox are used to offer you a youthful look, they work in different ways and are used in different areas of concern.

How does Botox work?

Botulinum toxin is a purified and natural protein. It offers a temporary way to relax the muscles which lead to facial wrinkles and lines. It is used for treating other medical conditions like excessive underarm sweating or migraines. Botox is a result of many decades of studies making it a safe product. It has been certified for use in both the cosmetic and medical field. There are minimal possible side effects to this treatment, mainly some swelling and bruising may occur at the injection site. But a huge benefit is that you are free to go about your day following the Botox treatment.

How do fillers work?

Fillers may be used as a treatment for different concerns, from fine lines to deep skin depression. Some fillers can also be used for lip augmentation. A majority of the fillers are made using Hyaluronic acid which is a substance found naturally in your body which helps make your results natural. These treatments are rather quick, only taking about 45 minutes for completion. Most patients find the treatment easy and go about their normal activities on the same day.

When should you use Botox vs fillers?

The basic rule about Botox vs. Fillers is using Botox on lines of expression and Fillers on lines at rest. Botox works well on all the crease points where the muscles contract and fillers work best on deep lines where facial muscles are not contracting. The Hyaluronic acid fillers come in various thicknesses and we can choose the right one based upon your concerns and desired goal; the longevity of these injections vary based upon the product injected and where they are inejcted. Fillers like Restylane and Juvederm are used on all areas of the face and for creating fuller lips. Botox usually lasts for about 4 months.

Where should you use Botox and fillers?

Hyaluronic acid fillers are great for filling your lips and other areas on your face such as the cheeks, under the eyes, temples and jawline. Botox is best in areas that use facial expressions like the crow’s feet, frown lines, and the lines between your brows.

When deciding between Botox and fillers, it is best to see a qualified, and well trained provider who will evaluate your skin and help you choose the best treatment that suits your skin, cosmetic goals, and budget. A customized treatment plan which uses both Botox and fillers to give you overall rejuvenation is the best option for most patients. At MDSkin Lounge we provide our patients with all of the information needed to make an informed decision on what type of injectable treatment is right for them.

Getting Injectables That You Can Trust Phoenix

Getting Injectables That You Can Trust

Injectables and fillers are great tools in the aesthetics industry to help with visible signs of aging. These treatments help many people to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful appearance. There are so many different types of injectables and fillers on the market that it can be hard to keep track of what is a trustworthy product. Now more than ever, there are counterfeit injectables popping up all around us. These are very dangerous and can have lasting effects on your health if used on you.

The Rise of Counterfeit Injectables

Counterfeit medicines are on the rise. It is hard to pinpoint an exact number for how many counterfeit treatments are out there now, but estimates say that about 10% of all drugs are fraudulent. These types of faux-treatments can be extremely dangerous for patients. Often side effects include infection, deformity, scarring, immunological issues, and sometimes death. The problem is that these drugs are not made in a trusted facility. Also, the products in these drugs are not FDA approved or safe for human consumption. Many of these counterfeit injectables have been found to contain arsenic, cyanide, mercury, urine, and rat droppings. Even unmonitored forms of Botulinum Toxin, which is used in a purified form in BOTOX®, can be deadly. To be sure that you are getting safe, secure treatments, you should go to a trusted doctor and facility.

Getting Reliable Injectable Treatment

Patients should never entertain the idea of using off-brand or counterfeit treatments. If you are receiving an extremely discounted price for treatment, there may be a reason for it. To ensure that you are getting the real thing you should always go to a center that is managed by a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist. MDSkin  Lounge is owned and operated by Dr. Bryan Gawley, a board-certified, trusted plastic surgeon who wants his patients to understand the risk of getting these procedures from other sources. There are many different ways to be safe when considering the treatment. For safety you can do a few things:

  • Learn about the brands of Injectables and Fillers
  • Examine the product yourself at the treatment time
  • Watch when the product is removed from its packaging
  • Make sure the needle is filled in front of you
  • Make sure it is a sterile needle
  • Check prices around your area for the treatment

The best practice for getting reliable treatment is by going to a reputable facility. The MDSkin Lounge team is trusted by their patients and the community around them. The rise of counterfeit injectables is scary but by going to recognized centers such as MDSkin Lounge, you can be sure you are receiving safe, secure treatment.

The Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma Phoenix

The Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma

Are you starting to notice that your complexion is looking a bit dull? Or perhaps early signs of aging such as wrinkles and lines have begun to pop up. If this sounds like you, you may be able to benefit from PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy. Read on to learn more about this treatment and what it can do for you.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets – many times greater than occurs normally in blood. As a concentrated source of autologous platelets, PRP contains several different growth factors and other cytokines that stimulate the healing of soft tissue.

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP therapy is a treatment that involves withdrawing a patient’s own blood, spinning it down so that only the PRP cells remain, and then either injecting it into the skin or placing it on top of the skin with other treatment modalities.

What are the benefits of PRP Therapy?

The PRP Platelets release growth factors which regulate the healing cascade. They signal the surrounding cells to repair damaged tissue and regenerate new tissue, reduce inflammation, and are significant contributors to cell proliferation. The PRP induces new collagen and blood vessels (which produce a healthy glow).

What treatments use PRP?

There are a number of treatments that can use PRP to enhance results, including:

Application of PRP after microneedling, also known as the Vampire facial, is a very popular treatment to stimulate collagen and improve pore size and fine lines.

Hair Regeneration

The newest trend is injecting it into the scalp.  PRP contains essential proteins that stimulate natural hair growth.  We recommend a series of three, done four weeks apart.

We apply PRP after laser treatments to enhance the results and promote faster healing.

We use PRP combined with fillers to help stimulate collagen, improve skin tone and elasticity, and promote healing.

Why is There Still Misinformation on Fillers and Injectables? Phoenix

Why is There Still Misinformation on Fillers and Injectables?

The cosmetic industry has advanced greatly in the past decade, and there seems to be a lot of confusion around fillers and injectables.  Some people think Botox is the only type of injectable cosmetic medicine, some believe injectables can replace surgery, and others think injectables make everyone look overdone. Some fillers are more versatile than other fillers, and it is vital to understand that the product choice and product injection technique will determine your treatment outcome.  It is important to go to an office run by a board-certified dermatologist or board-certified plastic surgeon to help explain injectables and how they can be used so you can get a beautiful, natural looking treatment. Read on to learn more about fillers and injectables so you can feel confident with your treatment option.

When would a laser be used in conjunction with fillers and toxins?

Aging is a complex process and single therapies, such as injectables, might be insufficient in dealing with all the signs that appear with time.  Instead of using one method exclusively, we tend to use combination therapies.  The most natural result is attained using multiple treatments.

Lasers and fillers

  • Both can be used effectively for the treatment of static wrinkles. The depth of the wrinkle, skin type, and recovery time after the procedure may influence the choice of either method.
  • Fillers are the primary therapy for deep volume loss, and lasers are the first method to be used for superficial lines, loss of elastin, and sun damage.  Lasers will improve skin quality, and fillers can treat deeper effects.

The combination of fillers and lasers creates synergistic results. Together, they will reverse the aging process far better than each one can on its own. A combination of fillers and lasers is also possible in the same session depending on which tools are used.  When a full-face laser resurfacing is planned, the resurfacing should be first, and the filler should follow when the skin is healed and swelling has subsided, usually 4-6 weeks post laser.

What age-related issues are fillers and toxins used For?

Aging is a continuous process that ranges from mild to very severe deficiencies.  When it comes to fillers and toxins, it is not only the injection technique that makes the difference but understanding the aging process and at what point of the aging curve the patient stands.

Lines become more pronounced due to muscular hyperactivity and/or elastosis.  Skin laxity and sagginess happen as we lose bone structure and fat tissue under the skin.  Injectables have the ability to slow down the aging process by controlling the signs of aging. It is important to understand that several interventions need to be employed to get the best results (injectables, lasers/chemical peels, topical products, and surgery).

When are toxins and fillers Used?

Neurotoxins are the best tool for the upper third of the face, while injectable fillers are optimal for the mid- and lower thirds. Toxins will reduce lines in the forehead, around the eyes, and around the mouth.  They are also used to help lift and reshape the brows, making the patient appear more rested and refreshed.  Fillers are injected to replace lost volume and give structure back to the face.  They can be used to replace volume loss under the eyes, in the cheeks, and in the lines around the mouth.   Fillers are also used to augment the cheeks, chin, and lips.

How can fillers make you look “done?”

A common challenge that can be seen is over-injection at the cheekbone level or in the lips, which is not considered aesthetically appealing.  Both patients and injectors need to be aware of balance and proportion in these areas.  It is also important to correct the face on a global level.  If only part of the face is corrected, it will not look normal, and the uncorrected areas will be even more distracting.

Furthermore, it is important not to forget about the three-dimensional view.  What looks good from the front might not look good from the sides.  Patients must also be evaluated not only front on, but from all angles.  They must also be evaluated not only in a static position, but also in animation.

How can fillers be reversed if you don’t like the results?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be reversed with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.  It is injected into the area the filler was placed, causing it to dissolve immediately

How do collagen stimulators work?  How do they produce collagen differently than other products?

Collagen stimulators, such as Poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA), offer more than just a filling effect.  PLLA is a synthetic biodegradable material.  When injected into the dermis or subdermis, it becomes a facial volumizer as it gradually stimulates collagen formation to restructure the facial tissue.  This is a gradual process, usually 3 sessions are required to get optimal results. PLLA has a volumizing effect through its unique collagen stimulation properties and is ideal for the temples, the cheeks, and restoration of the mandibular line.

Popular Non-Surgical Treatments for Men Phoenix

Popular Non-Surgical Treatments for Men

In the past, plastic and cosmetic surgery was mainly reserved for women. However, nowadays, men are choosing to undergo procedures to help improve their appearance and self-esteem. This sudden change may be due to the fact that cosmetic and plastic surgery are now widely accepted by society. Also, cultural shifts have caused the idea of the “ideal” male to change, with soft skin and a youthful appearance becoming desired.

The recent development of quick and easy non-surgical treatments that require little to no downtime may also attribute to the popularity of men’s treatments. These treatments often appeal to men since they do not require extended downtime from work, and do not interfere with physical activities. Many men also look to achieve subtle and natural-looking improvements, which can be achieved with non-surgical options.

ASPS Stats

According to the latest stats from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), male plastic surgery has risen 28% since 2000. In 2016, the top five male cosmetic minimally invasive procedures included Botox, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and soft tissue fillers.
