Can you use Botox under your eyes?

Botox, also known as onabotulinumtoxinA, is a popular procedure for producing a younger-looking appearance.  Botox works by keeping certain muscles from tightening, leaving smoother, refreshed skin.  While it is commonly injected to address concerns of wrinkles and fine lines in areas such as smile or forehead lines, Botox can be injected near the eyes as well!

A commonly asked question about Botox is whether it can be effectively used near the eyes.  The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Botox for cosmetic purposes around the crow’s feet area (sides of the eyes) and frown line area (in between the eyes – also known as glabellar lines).

Effectiveness of Botox Near the Eyes

In the United States, Botox has been approved to reduce the appearance of glabellar lines, commonly referred to as frown lines, since 2002.  While often used to address the crow’s feet, Botox was officially approved by the United States for cosmetic use in the crow’s feet area in 2013.  Temporarily smoothing wrinkles around the eyes and frown lines is a popular way to rejuvenate the face.

In a 2003 study, Botox was injected in the crow’s feet area or underneath the eyes to determine where it could effectively target wrinkles.  Nineteen women participated in a study and received injections.  The women who had injections around their eyes in the crow’s feet area reported positive results rather than those who strictly had injections under their eyes (an area which has not been FDA approved).

The results hinted that Botox could improve the look of the crow’s feet by effectively minimizing these wrinkles around the sides of the eyes.  Today, Botox remains the only neuromodulator that has been FDA approved for cosmetic treatment in the crow’s feet area.

What to Expect from a Botox Treatment

During treatment, Botox will be injected directly into the areas of concern, which may include smile, forehead, frown, or crow’s feet lines.  The treatment itself only takes a few minutes and has little to no downtime.  Many patients schedule their Botox appointments during their lunch hours.  Makeup can be reapplied after treatment to cover temporary redness that may occur at the injection site.

Botox treatments are measured in units and the number of units used will vary between patients.  This depends on the areas treated and the concerns of the patient.  Our expert injectors at MDSkin Lounge and MDSkin Bar will determine the number of units necessary for each patient to achieve the best results.

Many patients begin to see results from their treatment within a few days, and full results typically appear within two weeks.  Results from a Botox treatment last between three to four months in an average patient.  It is recommended to follow up with regular Botox injections every three to four months to maintain smooth, refreshed skin.
