Dysport®

With Dysport, you can smooth fine lines and wrinkles without requiring any surgery or scarring.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is a neuromodulator injectable which is very similar overall to the more well-known Botox Cosmetic. The product works using botulinum toxin to temporarily block nerve receptors in muscles. This smooths dynamic wrinkles, or the wrinkles that form as a result of facial movement. Tiny amounts of Dysport are injected into specific facial muscles, causing a local relaxation. The lines and wrinkles gradually smooth out and new creases are prevented from forming. Other facial muscles, like those needed to raise the eyebrows, are not affected so a natural expression is maintained.

Who Can Benefit from Dysport?

Years of squinting and frowning tend to leave deep wrinkles in the skin. On many people, frown lines produce an angry or sad look that detracts from a pleasant facial appearance. Simple injections of Dysport® will improve these lines without surgery and without scars.

Dysport is primarily intended for lines between the eyebrows, known as glabellar lines or 11 lines. However, your injector may suggest Dysport for many other areas, which can include:

  • Crow’s feet, or lines at the corners of the eyes
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Platysmal bands, or vertical lines on the neck
  • Jawline reduction through masseter muscle injections
  • Perioral lines (lines around the mouth) or turned-down corners of the mouth

Before you receive Dysport injections, your injector will review your health history to ensure that Dysport is a safe and suitable option for you. You may not be a candidate due to health conditions such as bleeding disorders or milk allergies. Some patients may also be poor candidates because their lines and wrinkles are not caused by repetitive facial expressions. For these patients, filler injectables are recommended instead.

How Long Do Dysport Results Last?

Dysport results are not permanent. Over time, the chemical messenger that communicates between the nerves and muscles is restored and the natural range of motion returns. On average, Dysport results last about 3-4 months. This will vary based on a range of factors including the injection site, the amount of Dysport you receive, and whether you have received neuromodulator injections before. Once your results start to diminish, you can receive maintenance injections. For most patients, results will continually last longer as they receive more maintenance treatments. During a consultation, your injector can create a treatment plan so you can enjoy your results long-term.

Botox vs. Dysport

Botox and Dysport are similar products which work using the same active ingredient, but have varying formulas. Botox has been available in the U.S. for longer, and is therefore more widely known. Some patients may select one product over the other based on their personal preference, and your injector can help you choose the best option for you. On average, Dysport results tend to be more immediate, but Botox results tend to last slightly longer. Dysport also results in softer results than Botox, which for some make it appear more natural for first-time patients. Finally, Dysport is FDA approved to treat glabellar lines, but can be used off-label for other purposes. The effectiveness of Botox has been studied further, but most professionals find the two products to be similarly effective.
